To the dismay of many local fans, the Ozzfest 2002 Raleigh date has been canceled.
The show, scheduled for July 24, was called off due to recent routing changes and will not be rescheduled, according to a release from the Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek, where the concert was to be held. A Cincinnati performance also was canceled for the same reason, said a publicist for Atlantic Records.
The tour's lineup included a full day of rock and metal with Ozzy Osbourne, Down, Hatebreed, Meshuggah, Neurotica, The Lostprophets, Andrew W.K., Pulse Ultra, Otep, 3rd Strike, Soil, Ill Nino, System Of A Down, Rob Zombie, P.O.D., Drowning Pool, Adema, Black Label Society, The Apex Theory and special guest Flaw.
Wilmington fans who planned to attend the seven-year-old metal-fest are disappointed in the cancellation.
"I still feel that, if in any way possible, the show should go on. I think it's a disappointment," said 21-year-old Ian Henderson.
Mr. Henderson didn't have tickets to Ozzfest yet but planned to purchase them before he found out about the cancellation. He said he was dismayed because he felt two bands on the tour needed the exposure they would have received by performing at the Raleigh date.
"Down and Black Label Society definitely deserve a place in the mainstream, especially because they both have a southern vibe," Mr. Henderson said.
Another Wilmington fan, 23-year-old Chris Walch, had two tickets to attend Ozzfest.
"I was definitely looking forward to it this year," Mr. Walch said. The CEO of Charged Productions, a portable recording business, especially wanted to see System of a Down perform.
Some fans have speculated that the concert dates may have been canceled due to Mr. Osbourne's wife's health condition, although there has been no official statement that her condition was the reason for canceling Raleigh's date. Ozzy's wife, Sharon, recently was diagnosed with colon cancer, but underwent surgery July 3 and is expected to make a full recovery, according to statements released by the family.
The first two Ozzfest shows – July 6 in Bristow, Va., and July 7 in Pittsburgh, Pa. – were postponed due to Sharon's surgery.
Fans who spent anywhere from $39.50 to $100.50 on tickets can get full refunds by returning tickets to point of purchase.
